What does a registered agent do?
A registered agent is the contact listed with your state to receive legal notices and official state correspondence for your business. The agent receives qualifying notices at a registered office and forwards them to you.
Does this keep my home address private?
The registered office address can be used on your registered-agent listing instead of your home address. Other addresses required in your business filings may still be public. This service is not a virtual office or a general business-mail address.
What will I pay?
Your first year of registered-agent service costs $99. Switching an existing business may add a one-time state filing fee. You will see the service price, applicable fee, and total before payment.
Can I order before forming my business?
Yes. We do not file your formation and we do not collect the state's formation fee. Choose "Forming now" at checkout. After payment, use your agent name and address in the formation filing you submit. Company formation and its filing fees are separate; no change-of-agent fee applies to this option.
What about an EIN, an operating agreement or forming the company?
CivicNest is registered-agent service only. The IRS issues EINs free at irs.gov. Company formation and operating agreements are available from LegalZoom or Bizee, or directly through your Secretary of State. Our agent details work with any of them.
When do I receive my agent details?
Your agent name and office address are provided after payment through your order confirmation and order status page. Use the details supplied with your order for your state.
Who handles switching my agent?
CivicNest prepares and submits the change-of-agent filing for your existing business. We contact you if more information is needed and email you when the state accepts the appointment. Payment confirmation is not state acceptance.
How does renewal work?
Service renews annually at the then-current price until you cancel. The $99 offer covers your first year. Cancellation and agent resignation terms are set out in the Registered Agent Service Agreement.
